My first year at The University

of Virginia, we shared an office in

Cabell Hall, though you were ahead of me.

I watched with awe as you uncapped your pen,

pulled your feet from desktop to floor and sat

up straight to write in ink on unlined paper,

recap, lean back, put feet back up and wait

to see if the next thought, too, would be a keeper.

In my eyes, you were W. V. O. Quine’s

equal, proof being your desk, completely clear

except for that one sheet of abstruse signs.

Mine was strewn with books, an unlit bonfire

of sanctioned texts and illicit poetry.
